External Wall Insulation (EWI)
Wrapping your house in insulation and finishing it in render — warmer rooms and lower heating bills.
External Wall Insulation (EWI)in North Cornwall & Devon
A full insulation wrap: boards fixed to existing walls, covered with a reinforced basecoat and silicone render. Warmer, smarter, no more damp.
An uninsulated solid wall can lose up to 45% of a house's heat. EWI fixes that by wrapping the whole building in insulation boards — usually EPS, which is light, cost-effective and the common choice, or mineral wool where fire resistance, better soundproofing and extra breathability matter — glued and mechanically pinned, then covered in a reinforced basecoat with mesh, a primer, and a silicone render finish. For solid-wall houses round here, it's the single biggest upgrade available. It moves the cold point outside the brickwork, which stops penetrating damp, kills condensation in cold corners, and cuts outside noise noticeably. A tired pebbledash or roughcast house comes out looking like a new build — crisp lines, proper window reveals, and whatever colour you want.
How we do it
01. Fix the boards
Gluing and pinning insulation boards (EPS or mineral wool) to the wall.
02. Rasp & level
Rasping boards flush and level across the whole face.
03. Basecoat & mesh
Polymer basecoat with strong fibreglass mesh bedded in.
04. Primer
A colour-matched primer over the basecoat to even out suction and help the topcoat bond.
05. Silicone topcoat
Breathable, water-repellent silicone render finish.

Frequently asked questions
Q.Do I need planning permission for EWI?
A.Usually falls under permitted development. Worth checking with the council if it significantly changes the appearance or pushes past existing rooflines.
Q.Will it stop internal damp?
A.Yes — keeps the wall warm inside the insulation wrap, removing the cold surfaces that caused damp and condensation.
Q.How much will heating bills drop?
A.On a solid-wall house, most people see 30–50% off their heating in the first full winter.
Q.Can EWI be fitted in winter?
A.Boards can go on any time. The wet work needs to stay above 5°C and dry, so it goes slower in colder months.
