Plastering & Rendering in Tintagel
Tintagel's exposed coastal and moorland position, plus its heritage-listed buildings, require a careful approach to render specification.
Tintagel is a small village on the north Cornwall cliffs, famous for its castle and Arthurian connections. It sits at a genuinely exposed position — the Atlantic cliffs here see some of the highest wind and rainfall exposure in Cornwall. The housing is mostly slate-hung and stone construction typical of the north Cornish coastal villages, with significant heritage designation across the area.
The stone buildings in Tintagel are constructed from local Cornish slate and volcanic rock — materials that have been used here since the medieval period. A breathable render is not just preferable for this construction type, it is typically required: both for planning compliance on listed and locally-listed buildings, and because the wall construction physically demands a breathable system. Hard cement render on these walls traps moisture, causes the slate face to spall, and in extreme cases can cause structural damage.
The exposure here is fierce. The cliffs get direct Atlantic weather — westerly storms, salt spray, and persistent wind-driven rain. Any render going onto an exposed coastal elevation at Tintagel needs to be rated for that environment. Silicone render is the natural finish coat where a modern system is appropriate; a breathable system is the only choice for older buildings.
The village and surrounding farms also include agricultural buildings and converted barns — a mix of uses that brings different render requirements. A modern farm building extension uses different materials than a 17th-century longhouse conversion, and we specify accordingly.
